PEOPLE'S POLL - Why girls are more difficult to raise

IN A RECENTLY PUBLISHED POLL, we saw where 31 per cent of the respondents felt that girls were harder to raise than boys. But where does this notion come from and is it justified? It seems that most people think that girls are harder to raise because they are vulnerable to getting pregnant. But what are the other reasons? This is what we found out:

According to these results, the second most popular reason for people thinking that girls are harder to raise is the belief that they require more attention and guidance. The same percentage of people that gave this as a reason also thought that girls are more stubborn, don't listen and get into trouble and are therefore more difficult to raise. What these beliefs reflect however is the stereotypes that have come to be attached to each gender. That is, the belief that girls will become pregnant soon and that boys will lead a life of crime.

The poll was conducted on January 28 - 29 by Johnson Survey Research Limited

Sample size: 1008 residents

Age of sample: 16 and older

Sampling error: +/- 3.1 %
