FABIAN 'GUN SMOKE' McDermot, the person charged with the murder of a teacher in Manley Meadows was yesterday sentenced to 12 months imprison-ment at hard labour for a different crime.
The accused appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magis-trate's Court to answer to a charge of murder but he ended up being slapped with a second charge of false declaration. This was after the clerk of court told the court that the accused had signed his name as Robert Scott on the court files but his name was actually Fabian McDermot.
The 21 year old accused told the court that McDermot was his correct name and after checks by the investigating officer this was found to be true. McDermot, whom the court was told was an area leader from the Manley Meadows community, pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced.
Date set for case
In the meantime the accused was remanded in custody for the murder case of the teacher, Delta Bailey, who taught at the Windward Road Primary and Junior High school. The murder case will again be mentioned on October 14 and the fingerprints of the accused were also ordered to be taken.
It is alleged that on August 25, Bailey, a 31-year-old teacher accompanied her sister to the bus stop and returned to her sister's residence at Sandy Close, Manley Meadows, shortly after. There she allegedly saw someone coming from the house with her nephew's bicycle.
Bailey refused to allow him to leave with the bicycle and an argument developed between the two and she was stabbed in the chest twice.
