Residents turn out to clean Hellshire beach

By RASBERT TURNER - Portmore Star Writer

HUNDREDS OF CIVIC-MINDED individuals turned out at the Hellshire beach in Portmore on Saturday, to clean up the beach area.

THE PORTMORE STAR visited the beach about noon to find several sweating persons cleaning the area of debris and plastic bottles, plastic bags and other refuse.

The clean-up, which was a part of the International Coastal Clean-up Day, saw students from St. Jago High School, business persons and the Peace Corp headed by Kaelyn and Shane McCall, all chipping in to clean the beach environs.

Several bags of what was cleaned from the beach were seen neatly stacked for removal. Note was also made of the different types of waste removed from the beach. For example plastic bottles were stored differently for recyclling.

Kaelyn McCall said that the clean up of the beach is not a one-off thing and that they will be doing follow-ups to ensure it remains clean.

Mayor of Portmore, George Lee told THE PORTMORE STAR that he totally endorses the clean-up of the beach and hope that persons using it will be mindful of the effort it takes to clean it.

The clean-up of the beach is not a one-off thing and they will be doing follow-ups to ensure it remains clean ... Says Kaelyn McCall
