CONSTABLE LEROY BAILEY was granted $80,000 bail when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's court on Friday to answer to a charge of breaching the Corruption Prevention Act.
The 16-year veteran will face trial on Thursday, September 16, facing allegations that he agreed to accept a bribe of $8,000 from a motorist on Friday, August 20, in the Half Way Tree area in order to forget a traffic offense.
The prosecution is purporting that a few days before his arrest, Bailey stopped the motorist for breaking a red light. The driver reportedly asked for leniency and Bailey was said to have requested a $10,000 pay off.
The motorist was said to have offered $8,000 to be paid on August 20. The driver made a report to the Office of Professional Responsibilty (OPR), who copied the notes and set up a sting operation.
When Bailey is alleged to have attempted to meet the motorist at the gates of Up Park Camp, he was instead met by police authority from the OPR. Bailey, however, reportedly sped off towards Marescaux Road. He was said to have been chased to the Wolmer's Girls School, Kingston 5, where he was subsequently arrested and charged.
Resident Magistrate, Martin Gayle, ruled that he surrender his travel documents and put a stop order in place. Bailey must report to the Duhaney Park Police Station three times a week, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., before the trial commences.
