TWO OF THE three suspects charged with the murder of Inspector Ancel Dwyer have complained that they are being physically abused by warders at the Horizon Remand Centre.
The complaint was made by the attorney defending Carlos McKie and his 17 year-old sister to Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates' Court last week.
The attorney for the accused persons told the court that his clients had told him the warders were physically abusing them while at the New Horizon Remand Centre.
As a result, Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle instructed the Clerk of Courts Hansurd Lawson to write a letter to the remand centre outlining the complaints of the suspects.
Brutal killing
McKie, 25, and his 17 year-old sister are charged along with 20 year-old Shenika Smith in connection with the brutal killing of Police Inspector Ansel Dwyer, 45, formerly of the Corporate Strategy Co-ordination Unit.
A 27-year veteran of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), Inspector Dwyer was attacked at his Washington Gardens' home in St. Andrew and stabbed 79 times on the night of November 8.
The teenager has been charged with murder, illegal possession of firearm and robbery with aggravation. Her brother was charged with conspiracy to robbery, accessory after the fact to murder, receiving stolen property and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition. Smith is facing charges of murder, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and robbery with aggravation.
All three were remanded in custody and a January 16 date set as their attorney said he needed more time to go over the files.
In the meantime, The New Horizon Remand Centre has denied that any prisoner there has been physically abused by warders.
