THE EDITOR MADAM:
As a long time supporter of the JLP, I believe its leader, Edward Seaga, should do the honourable thing and step down, rather than be forced out in humiliation and perhaps shame.
I'm really not sure what the JLP is waiting for or holding on to. Its future rests in its ability to bring about effective change in its leadership!
Not even Seaga's harshest critics will dispute his vast contribution to Jamaica's politics and the country's social and economic development. He should therefore exit with style, grace, and humility, holding his head high rather than be 'forced' to step aside.
It is time
No one likes to give up power, more so political. It is 'sweet' and has tremendous fringe benefits but there are times when we must realise when it is time to let go and move on. Perhaps the JLP might even consider Mr Seaga as an honourable advisor to the party leadership, given his expertise in Government, but he has surely outdone his tenure of effective leadership and should no longer be at the helm in the best interest of the party and its future.
Both parties are now suffering from having a leadership core which is largely stale and outdated, out of touch, and with very little to show in terms of effectiveness and 'getting the job done'. The development of the country and Jamaica's politics have suffered for so long as a result, it is time for change.
Fortunately, we have already seen some form of change in the JLP leadership. They have begun this process and like a volcano, they are slowly erupting, but oftentimes change has to be more forceful and dynamic, fearless and quick, to have any effect. The political party which can most effectively bring about this much needed change, and also show stability, purpose, stamina and cohesiveness, will no doubt form the next Government!
Jamaicans are so desperate for change and progress, they are also hungry for economic and social development and a better quality of life!
